Vintage Tan Mud Cloth Throw
Dimensions: 180 x 150cm approx.
Why we love it:
We sourced this exquisite hand dyed vintage mud cloth in the souks of Marrakesh from a darling gentleman, selling his wares inside of a fabric tent where he has been trading in African textiles for decades. We chose this piece from his vast collection for its texture, tone and living history and then brought it home to search for a stunning lining fabric to turn it into a throw. It took a while, but we finally fell in love with an exquisite soft linen blend from Rose Tarlow’s exclusive line for Melrose House, in an earthy natural wheat hue that pairs perfectly with the mud cloth. A one-off Love After Love treasure to cherish and pass down the generations.
Mud cloth is traditionally from West Africa and is made by weaving cotton into strips which are then dyed with local natural materials. Mud is painted on to make a pattern which then protects the cotton from further colour treatment, a bit like tie dye. The finished strips are sun dried , the mud chipped off to reveal the colour underneath, and then hand sewn together to make the fabric.
